Juan López

Juan López’ (1979, Alto Maliaño, Cantabria) work reflects on how the experience of inhabiting limits our perception of space and time. His work turn toward elements of an architectural character associated with structures of power in order to capture the alternatives toward normative social relationships. Through metaphors -and always from a specific intervention in given spaces- he seeks to break and then recompose the links between the three elements that make up the equation of his work: city, subjectivity and power.

It is true that the photogravure technique helps to achieve a wide variety of shades of grey and that the action of the press is the beginning of the volume that gives a strong physical presence to the resulting image. The complicated thing about this composition is that to go from the lightest to the darkest, you will need to make different strokes: a process in which the work advances to go back, in which a detail that appears in the middle of the composition determines what comes next, and what comes before. You cannot repeat it or erase it, you can darken the paper but you can never lighten it, so the modification of a shade also alters everything around it. In a certain way it is like thinking that an action not only changes the future, but also alters the past [...]
