The work of Jacobo Castellano (Jaén, 1976) refer obsessively to the recovery of recollections stored in his memory and leads to a deep reflection on essential issues of life and death.

Jacobo Castellano_Retablos
One of the most important works of the National Sculpture Museum of Valladolid is undoubtedly the Main Altarpiece of San Benito El Real. In it we can see the extraordinary display of carvings, polychromes and carnations developed by Alonso Berruguete, one of the most important Spanish sculptors of all time. With an iconography based on the childhood of Christ and the life of Saint Benedict, this altarpiece is presented to us unmounted throughout three rooms of the museum, without losing any of its monumentality and interest. The excellent current layout allows us to observe the rear of this great work, which is where Castellano focused his attention and created the series presented here.
Printed by Elena Alonso, Usama Habil and Dan Benveniste.

Jacobo Castellano_Un acto en seco
Using Samuel Beckett's The Unnamable (1953) as a starting point, Jacobo Castellano constructs, through different objects, the diffuse space in which the reflections and ramblings of Malone, the main character in the novel, take place. The impossibility of recognising himself and with an added existentialist anguish is a perfect scenario for Castellano: It gives him the possibility of creating an uninhabited space where human presence is only suggested through violated everyday objects; cement walls and fictional landscapes that seem to oppose any connection with the real world.

Jacobo Castellano_Sin Vistas
In Sin Vistas, Jacobo Castellano make use of the multiple possibilities within the graphic media to create a group of work based on past experiences of the artists’ own existence and memories. This series consists of a suite of nine black/white dry point etchings as well as a large format polyptych created in photogravure and intaglio etching. In the suite of dry point etchings, the viewer discovers a variation of elements such as wheels, coffins, wire fences and curtains, combined with religious and television media iconography. There is a suggestion of certain structures, which appear to be on the edge of collapse. The dark, semi-transparent curtains appear to point towards a place where to hide, a place where to protect oneself from this intuitive but eminent collapse.
